Improving Postural Stability

Improving postural stability may help with pain that is biomechanical/structural in nature. Many people walk with a forward leaning posture due to the head dropping forward, protraction (forward movement) of the shoulders, tight hip flexors and weak glutes. Here two simple techniques that you can use while sitting, walking, running and during many other types of exercise. The first technique will not only improve your posture, it is also excellent for relaxation of the shoulders.

1) Scapular control includes:

a) gently tightening the muscles between the shoulder blades

b) dropping the shoulder blades

2) Shortening stride length. This means taking shorter steps so your foot lands closer to your body rather than further away. This lessens the impact and allows for less stress and strain on the structures of the feet and legs.
